Title: Know My Name Pdf A Memoir

A New York Times Best Seller

"A devastating, immersive memoir...Miller is an extraordinary writer: plain, precise and moving." (NPR)

"Know My Name is a gut-punch, and in the end, somehow, also blessedly hopeful...She implores us, too, to challenge and question the systems that aren't working. As we examine how to prevent and prosecute sexual assault cases, this last lesson may be the most important of all." (Washington Post)

She was known to the world as Emily Doe when she stunned millions with a letter. Brock Turner had been sentenced to just six months in county jail after he was found sexually assaulting her on Stanford's campus. Her victim impact statement was posted on BuzzFeed, where it instantly went viral - viewed by 11 million people within four days, it was translated globally and read on the floor of Congress; it inspired changes in California law and the recall of the judge in the case. Thousands wrote to say that she had given them the courage to share their own experiences of assault for the first time.

Now, she reclaims her identity to tell her story of trauma, transcendence, and the power of words. It was the perfect case, in many ways - there were eyewitnesses, Turner ran away, physical evidence was immediately secured. But her struggles with isolation and shame during the aftermath and the trial reveal the oppression victims face in even the best-case scenarios. Her story illuminates a culture biased to protect perpetrators, indicts a criminal justice system designed to fail the most vulnerable, and, ultimately, shines with the courage required to move through suffering and live a full and beautiful life.

Know My Name will forever transform the way we think about sexual assault, challenging our beliefs about what is acceptable and speaking truth to the tumultuous reality of healing. It also introduces listeners to an extraordinary writer, one whose words have already changed our world. Entwining pain, resilience, and humor, this memoir will stand as a modern classic.

EMILY DOE NO LONGER In case anyone doesn't know what they've stumbled upon, this is the book written by the brave young woman assaulted by swimmer Brock Turner on the Stanford campus, an assault halted by two bystanders when they realized she was lying on the ground unconscious and clearly well beyond being able to give consent. I say “brave” not because of what she endured, but because of her writings afterwards. To become the face of this issue is a bold and courageous step. Now that we know Chanel Miller's name, we cannot unknow it.This is her story, her version of events.Well written in a slightly angry voice. She's entitled.BOTTOM LINE: Read it.Beautiful. Raw. As captivating as her impact statement. I was happy to learn Chanel’s name and to learn she had written a book. I pre-ordered it. I decided to buy the kindle version because I wanted to have it immediately. The book did not disappoint. I’m drawn to her writing style. I enjoyed learning about the routines and life she had created while going through that long difficult court process. I enjoyed reading about the small moments she found solace and comfort in others, from the door women in Philadelphia, to the classmates in her summer art program, to everything that held her together even just momentarily.I think many will find this book invaluable, especially survivors of sexual assault. In a section Chanel wrote, “I’ve found that victims identify more with pain than with platitudes. When I write about weakness, about how I am barely getting though this, my hope is that they feel better, because it aligns with the truth that they are living.”I’ve never experienced sexual assault fortunately, but this book filled me with empathy and love for survivors everywhere. I also found this book meaningful because it resonated with my own personal battles with depression. Like Chanel, I’ve found comfort in “mundane” interactions with family, strangers, my dogs. Like Chanel, (in regards to her scuba diving story) I remember there’s other words existing that remind me of how beautiful life still is.I’ll end my review with more of Chanel’s beautiful words:“We may spend half our time wandering around, wondering what we’re even doing here, why it’s worth the effort. But living is an incredible thing, just to have been here, to have felt, if only briefly, the volume and depth of others’ empathy. I wrote, most of all, to tell you I have seen how good the world could be.”Chanel, if you somehow read this, just know I hold you in warmth and love and sincerely wish you the best in life. I’m not alone in that sentiment. Many are admiring you and sending you love. I’m so glad children will have the gift of your books.Loved it I can't remember the last time I pre-ordered a book but I was waiting eagerly for the mail to arrive today with my copy of "Know Your Name." .This book is emotional, detailed, raw and at times, difficult to read, but it is an important one in this day and age. I was blown away at Chanel's eloquent writing of such a difficult and deeply personal journey. I hope that every copy sold is a big "F U" to Brock Turner and the joke of a judge who gave his sentence. Chanel, we know your name, we hear your name and your story resonates with so many. I was horrified, disgusted and ashamed for my nation when Brock Turner's sentence was given. I cried tears of joy when I saw Chanel was releasing this book, and coming forward. I don't know you Chanel, but I am so proud of you. Thank you for letting us know your name.
