Dr. Sönke Ahrens is a writer and researcher in the field of education and social science, author of the award winning book “Experiment and Exploration. Forms of World-Disclosure” (Springer) and university teacher for philosophy of education.

The key to good and efficient writing lies in the intelligent organisation of ideas and notes. This book helps students, academics and nonfiction writers to get more done, write intelligent texts and learn for the long run. It teaches you how to take smart notes and ensure they bring you and your projects forward. The Take Smart Notes principle is based on established psychological insight and draws from a tried and tested note-taking-technique. This is the first comprehensive guide and description of this system in English, and not only does it explain how it works, but also why. It suits students and academics in the social sciences and humanities, nonfiction writers and others who are in the business of reading, thinking and writing. Instead of wasting your time searching for notes, quotes or references, you can focus on what really counts: thinking, understanding and developing new ideas in writing. It does not matter if you prefer taking notes with pen and paper or on a computer, be it Windows, Mac or Linux. And you can start right away.

Invaluably practical book on thinking and learning as material practice I recently completed my PhD in the social sciences and wish that I had been able to read this book at the beginning of my graduate career. It's far more than a mere how-to on note-taking. It's effectively an evidence-based reflection on thinking and learning as a materially based practice that would be useful for everyone who is engaged in making knowledge in some way.The author draws on a variety of research dealing with attention, learning, cognition, etc. to make an argument for the "slip box" note-taking system (or "Zettelkasten" as made famous by prolific sociologist Niklas Luhmann). I tend to think of these types of books as "self-help" for academics, but in the best way. Reading this book opened my eyes to the habits and practices that will best help me reflect and digest the reading I do, and productively summarize and apply it to my research and writing. This process has already helped me to read more effectively, by focusing on what in the given text is relevant to what I already know or am puzzling about. I'm deeply convinced by this iterative and generative process of knowledge-production.If you're an academic or other knowledge worker who struggles with how to usefully organize and engage with the massive amounts of information that we all accumulate, this is the book for you. If you feel that the notes you take on things often get lost (in your organizing system) or become incomprehensible after time has passed, this book is for you. If you are interested in methods and practices for streamlining and optimizing your knowledge work (GTD-followers, I'm looking at you), buy this book! ;)How did a note taking book change my life? I've always wanted to write a book. I can never remember what books I've read. This book solved the problem! It lays out a simple process for how to pull information from one book and apply it to the thoughts/ ideas of another. I read and underline and write notes in the margin, but then I never come back to them. In fact, it turns out that the only way I can tell if I've read a book is to look inside and see if I made notes in it. Then I know that I've read it and put it down. This book lays out a simple process of how to take notes. I find now that when I'm reading, I'm going through a mental inventory of thoughts/ ideas from other books and my own that cause me to pause and reflect and interact with books in a way I never had before reading this one. Understanding how to take notes and getting into the habit of doing it has unleashed this new superpower within me that sees and believes that I can write a book.Title Is Inadequate This is a book about MUCH more than a way to take smart notes. Oh, sure, you’ll learn all about a super cool (and super simple) system for taking notes. But that is covered in the first 20% of the book. The rest of the book is about deep and critical topics related to smart note taking, like thinking well, reading well, the writing process and even how to set up habits of success. I almost didn’t read it because it looked too basic. I’m so glad I did.

One of the bEst guides for JTNP This guide is a replacement/back up for the one we use in our vacation rental. We get many positive comments on how well it is written and on the accurate content of the guide from our guests. I highly recommend this guide for those going to Joshua Tree National Park.Best guide to Joshua Tree! This book is by far the best guide to Joshua Tree National Park. I visit Joshua Tree at least a couple times every year. It is one of my favorite places to visit here in California. Wether your visit is for a day to a weekend outing, this book covers everything you will need to know and learn about Joshua Tree. The layout is excellent. The book is filled with incredible photographs of all the top sites to see in the park, wildlife, plus several historical photographs. Besides covering popular sites in the park, this book gives you a history of the park as well. There is even a section that covers the wildlife and plant life in the park. There are very useful maps of the main campgrounds. For the hikes listed, each includes a beautiful photograph and a brief description. This book even lists a few places to eat outside the park in 29 Palms. For anyone planning to travel to Joshua Tree, this book is a must have.Although this book covers all the most popular hiking trails and short excursions, it doesn't get into extreme detail about overnight backpacking in Joshua Tree. Besides this book, I highly recommend On Foot in Joshua Tree by Patty Furbush. Both these books are all you need to help you discover Joshua Tree National Park.Beautiful, comprehensive guide This book is beautiful, comprehensive guide to Joshua Tree National Park and it's surrounding communities. It provides vividly colored photos of the landscape and a brief guide to plants and animals one may encounter. It provides general maps of JTNP as well as very good detailed maps of specific points of interest which are being described. A causal browser of this book might well be inspired to visit. One can use it to plan a visit, and A visitor can confidently pack this along as a guidebook to find points of wonderment. Not only does the author provide guidance within Joshua Tree NP, but in the communities that border this park as well. Motels, restaurants, and points of interest are mentioned in enough detail for a reader to determine if they want to stop by and check them out. As a former visitor to JTNP, I found it to be very thorough, and as someone who is planning another trip, I plan to take it along as a guidebook to find new places to discover within and outside the Park. I hope this author undertakes a book on the Mojave National Preserve in the same style that this book was written.

No One at the Wheel Free Pdf

ISBN: B07JNT9RM3
Title: No One at the Wheel Pdf Driverless Cars and the Road of the Future

The country's leading transport expert describes how the driverless-vehicle revolution will transform highways, cities, workplaces, and laws not just here, but across the globe.

Our time at the wheel is done. Driving will become illegal, as human drivers will be demonstrably more dangerous than cars that pilot themselves. Is this an impossible future or a revolution just around the corner?

Sam Schwartz, America's most celebrated transportation guru, describes in this audiobook the revolution in self-driving cars. The ramifications will be dramatic, and the transition will be far from seamless. It will overturn the job market for the one in seven Americans who work in the trucking industry. It will cause us to grapple with new ethical dilemmas - if a car will hit a person or a building, endangering the lives of its passengers, who will decide what it does? It will further erode our privacy, since the vehicle can relay our location at any moment. And, like every other computer-controlled device, it can be vulnerable to hacking.

Right now, every major car maker here and abroad is working on bringing autonomous vehicles to consumers. The fleets are getting ready to roll, and nothing will ever be the same. This audiobook shows us what the future has in store.

Poor read Not very enjoyable. Gives extensive history of prior decades automobile facts which don’t ever feel very relevant to today’s autonomous vehicles. He makes definitive statements like ‘AV will clearly create more cars on the road and more congestion’. I’m not saying I agree or disagree but maybe that conclusion should have come after an entire chapter of discussions instead of just throwing it in blindly and factually in chapters 1-3.A Comprehensive, Realistic, Practical Study of the Future of Transportation I experienced so many moments of insight as I read this book. Among them were Sam Schwartz's discussions on-The importance of maintaining lane and road markers and protecting roads from unanticipated sources of clutter and confusion, such as road signs defaced with graffiti that would confuse an automated vehicle image processing system;-The criticality of rethinking land use and street real estate allocations among vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians-The intricate understanding of the non-verbal cues pedestrians and drivers interpret when a driver is edging toward a turn and a pedestrian is trying to cross the street in the crosswalk. Mr. Schwartz's understanding of the complexity of this and the difficulty of having it be translated and used in an artificial intelligence system was masterfully conveyed.-The challenge of having cities and towns dependent on parking violations revenue find other sources of revenue to replace lost revenue. There were many more discussions that wove together the technological, regulatory, economic and social challenges of transitioning to autonomous vehicles. I particularly liked his discussion of the EU's Global Data Protection Regulations and the degree to which they will inhibit the data collection that any artificial intelligence system, including the one that operates with autonomous vehicles, needs to learn and improve itself. The one subject that might have been covered in more depth is the degree to which AVs will depend on curbside communications infrastructure that has fragmented ownership and leasehold rights, obsolete rules on who can connect to a utility pole, and the potential for municipalities to overcharge those who want to build out 5G infrastructure on municipally-owned poles. However, that is a minor omission in an otherwise outstanding book. This is the kind of book that has been written so thoughtfully that I expect to be an exceptionally useful resource 20 years from now.Fascinating look at the future of automated cars It will be the best of times. It will be the worst of times. How will your life change when there is No One at the Wheel?“Most transportation experts say that by 2075 driven cars will be completely replaced...By 2035, we may find that the majority of driving miles are completed by machines, not humans.”In 2018, 1.3 million people are projected to die in road crashes with 50 million more injured. The need for a solution is clear. Autonomous vehicles are coming. Every major automobile company has one in development. Will the resulting society be a utopia of staring at your phone continuously while your car drives you to work with no risk of accidents? Or will it cause massive disruption in the economy and overcrowded roadways? What will the one out of seven US residents who work in transportation do for a living? How will they be retrained and who will fund it? The decisions made now will determine our later fate.No One at the Wheel shares the pros and cons of this new technological development. By making analogies to the development of the original cars, the author paints a dim view of the future of driven cars—as bleak as that of a horse and carriage in 1940.I found both the history of cars and the potential of autonomous vehicles fascinating. But I’m still unsure what I can do personally to ensure a rosy outcome. No One at the Wheel is recommended for futurists and historians in equal measure. 3 stars. Thanks to the publisher, PublicAffairs, and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

For more information on Dr. Sue Johnson and Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, visit www.eft.ca and www.holdmetight.com.

Heralded by the New York Times and Time magazine as the couple therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world.

In Hold me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond. With this in mind, she focuses on key moments in a relationship-from Recognizing the Demon Dialogue to Revisiting a Rocky Moment-and uses them as touchpoints for seven healing conversations. Through case studies from her practice, illuminating advice, and practical exercises, couples will learn how to nurture their relationships and ensure a lifetime of love.

"HOLD ME TIGHT" -- A Guide to Fulfilling Modern Relationships This is a wonderful book my husband and I are using as a guidebook in marriage counseling sessions. Our therapist chose it for its modern, nonjudgmental approach to partners. Honesty, sometimes painful, is the strength of your partnership.Excellent! Helped me see my own patterns and more importantly helped me see my husband with more compassion and grace.Great relationship book but not the most practical The ideas in the book seem exactly on target, and the book is well-written. My only criticism is that I think it doesn't really work as a "how to" guide. The conversations involved seem too tricky and open--that to undertake on your own when a relationship is already in a difficult stage. It feels like you still need a trained therapist to lean on, at least at the start.
