“Reviving Ophelia is a cultural touchstone and... [this] revamp carries the air of a cultural artifact.” —NPR “An important book…Pipher shines high-beam headlights on the world of teenage girls.” —Los Angeles Times“So, yeah, I’d say the new version of Reviving Ophelia? Pretty damn important read, even 25 years later. Maybe especially 25 years later.” —BookRiot “A must-read for all of us who care about young women in our lives…Reviving Ophelia arms us with information we can use in helping our daughters grow to adulthood with their strength intact.” —Lincoln Star Journal“Pipher is an eloquent advocate…[she] offers concrete suggestions for ways by which girls can build and maintain a strong sense of self.”—Publishers Weekly “Serious and thoughtful material presented with the fluidity of good fiction.”—Kirkus Reviews Mary Pipher is a therapist and clinical psychologist specializing in women, trauma, and the effects of our culture on mental health, which has earned her the title of "cultural therapist" for her generation. In addition to Reviving Ophelia, she is the author of several bestselling books, including Women Rowing North, The Shelter of Each Other, Another Country, Seeking Peace, and Letters to a Young Therapist. She lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. Sara Pipher Gilliam is a writer, editor and global advocate for refugee families, as well as a former Fulbright Scholar and middle school English teacher. She is Editor-in-Chief of Exchange, an international magazine for early childhood professionals and educators. She lives with her family in Hamilton, Ontario.

The 25th anniversary edition of the iconic book, revised and updated for 21st-century adolescent girls and their families.

In 1994, Reviving Ophelia was published, and it shone a much-needed spotlight on the problems faced by adolescent girls. The book became iconic and helped to reframe the national conversation about what author Mary Pipher called "a girl-poisoning culture" surrounding adolescents. Fast forward to today, and adolescent girls and the parents, teachers, and counselors who care about them find themselves confronting many of the same challenges Pipher wrote about originally as well as new ones specific to today.

Girls still struggle with misogyny, sexism, and issues of identity and self-esteem. But they're also more isolated than ever before: They don't talk face-to-face to the people around them, including their peers, as they used to: They're texting or on social media for hours at a time. And while girls today are less likely to be in trouble for their drinking or sexual behavior, they have a greater chance of becoming depressed, anxious, or suicidal.

In this revised and updated Reviving Ophelia, Pipher and her daughter, Sara Pipher Gilliam (who was a teenager at the time of the book's original publication), have incorporated these new issues for a 21st-century readership. In addition to examining the impact that social media has on adolescent girls' lives today, Pipher and Gilliam explore the rising and empowering importance of student activism in girls' lives, the wider acceptance of diverse communities among young people, and the growing disparities between urban and rural, rich and poor, and how they can affect young girls' sense of self-worth. With a new foreword and afterword and chapters that explore these topics, this new edition of Reviving Ophelia builds on the relevance of the original as it provides key insights into the challenges and opportunities facing adolescent girls today.

The approach Pipher and Gilliam take in the new edition is just what it was in the original: a timely, readable combination of insightful research and real-world examples that illuminate the challenges young women face and the ways to address them. This updated Reviving Ophelia looks at 21st century adolescent girls through fresh eyes, with insights and ideas that will help new generations of readers.

Very disappointing. Extraordinary list of assertions and opinions without documentation. this is this, this is that, teenagers this, and that. Then we're supposed to read story-like case studies (as rendered by one or both -- its unclear which voice is writing) to document the huge list of assertions made before? I find this book extremely disappointing, after all the hype on public radio.Excellent read for the parents of girls A friend who has a daughter older than mine recommended this book. I was afraid it would be too technical, but the writing style is very accessible. Yes, it does get into some of the psychology of teen girls, but mostly the book contains case studies and examples of what teen girls are facing, what they are thinking, and what types of skills are beneficial in adolescence.I have a daughter who is independent and self-confident, and reading this book made me realize that just because she is this way as a young girl is not a guarantee that she will remain so during her teen years. I hope that with what I have read in this book I can help her maintain that strong sense of self I see in her now.Updated version what every parent of an adolescent girl needs! I grew up in the 80's and Reviving Ophelia was instrumental in helping my mother and I understand how my adolescence differed from hers. It gave us a pathway to communicate better and guide me through an era of high risk behaviors & depression among teenagers. Now, as a 40-something mom of a 10 year old, I voraciously read the revised edition. It provided me with knowledge & insight regarding the culture in which my daughter will come of age. It's easy to read, provides real world perspectives from adolescent girls who are, once again, growing up in a new culture.Everything that was great about the original version is still there along with new analysis & solutions in the age of social media, rising pressures and constant change. I am now equipped with practical solutions and knowledge to prepare myself and, more importantly, have conversations to educate & equip my daughter. Instead of being frightened and confused about what's ahead, I'm hopeful my daughter & I will make it through together.THANK YOU SARA and MARY! This book is a treasure.

Thomas Kinkade, the celebrated Painter of Light, is the most widely collected artist in the world. His tranquil, light-infused paintings affirm the basic values of family, home, faith in God, and the luminous beauty of nature.www.thomaskinkade.com

The Thomas Kinkade Painter of Light 2019 Deluxe Wall Calendar features beautiful paintings by Thomas Kinkade, the Painter of Light.

Each monthly spread features a full-color image such as Lovelight Cottage, Central Park in the Fall, or Hometown Evening. Also included in the calendar is a September through December 2018 spread. The deluxe wall calendar comes in a matching full-color envelope.

Thomas Kinkade is of course great artist and calendar does him justice. Love the pictures. I will have the calendar on my wall the first of Jan. and am a huge Thomas Kinkade fan and would recommend the beauty to any one that loves scenery and sayings.some issues For the most part, this is a high-quality, beautiful calendar. The pictures for eleven of the months are beautiful. But I'm a little confused about the picture for August. It depicts a downtown street, and there are old-fashioned cars, a man in a suit wearing a hat riding a bicycle, and...what appears to be two prostitutes standing by an old-fashioned street lamp. What's that all about? Also, there are a lot of holidays from different countries listed, and it takes up a lot of space in some of the squares which could be a problem if someone wanted to write in an appointment. For instance, on March 11. there are four holidays listed for Australia which take up almost the entire square: "Eight Hours Day", "Canberra Day", "Labour Day", and "Commonwealth Day". Maybe they are all important holidays in Australia, I don't know. All in all, though, the pictures are beautiful, and the numbers are large and dark. There is also a "notes" section for every month.Nice photos It is a calendar..what more can I say? Until I can get my husband to rely solely on his iPad or iPhone calendar we will use this. Have purchased a Kinkade calendar for many, many years and always enjoyed the pictures.

The Longest Line on the Map Pdf

ISBN: 1501103903
Title: The Longest Line on the Map Pdf The United States, the Pan-American Highway, and the Quest to Link the Americas
Author: Eric Rutkow
Published Date: 2019-01-08
Page: 448

“Rutkow offers a richly detailed examination of efforts to build a highway from Alaska to the tip of Argentina… A fresh, well-documented account of U.S.-Latin American relations.” —Kirkus Reviews“Rutkow’s excellent, thoroughly researched, and unusual look at this complicated mix of infrastructure innovations and international relations will engage a variety of reading tastes.” —Booklist“Everybody loves a shaggy dog story. A good one should be long and implausible but still on the edge of possibility. The chronicle at the heart of Eric Rutkow’s The Longest Line on the Map seems to qualify. The story involves the decades-long attempt to construct thousands of miles of railway—and, later, highway—to ‘link the Americas.’” —The Wall Street Journal “Rutkow's fascination with the Pan-American highway is evident in this meticulously researched and vividly recounted drama. He combines a historian's eye for detail with a storyteller's skill at bringing to life the dynamic political and social forces that conceived and constructed the international corridor.” —Shelf Awareness, starred review “A powerful argument against Washington’s growing embrace of isolationist policies at home and abroad. Highly recommended for U.S. and diplomatic historians, geopolitical scholars, and general readers.” —Library Journal, starred review Eric Rutkow is an assistant professor of history at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, and the author of The Longest Line on the Map. His first book, American Canopy: Trees, Forests, and the Making of a Nation (2012), received the Association of American Publishers’ PROSE Award for US history and was named one of the top books of the year by Smithsonian magazine. He earned his BA and PhD from Yale and his JD from Harvard.

From the award-winning author of American Canopy, a dazzling account of the world’s longest road, the Pan-American Highway, and the epic quest to link North and South America, a dramatic story of commerce, technology, politics, and the divergent fates of the Americas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Pan-American Highway, monument to a century’s worth of diplomacy and investment, education and engineering, scandal and sweat, is the longest road in the world, passable everywhere save the mythic Darien Gap that straddles Panama and Colombia. The highway’s history, however, has long remained a mystery, a story scattered among government archives, private papers, and fading memories. In contrast to the Panama Canal and its vast literature, the Pan-American Highway—the United States’ other great twentieth-century hemispheric infrastructure project—has become an orphan of the past, effectively erased from the story of the “American Century.”

The Longest Line on the Map uncovers this incredible tale for the first time and weaves it into a tapestry that fascinates, informs, and delights. Rutkow’s narrative forces the reader to take seriously the question: Why couldn’t the Americas have become a single region that “is” and not two near irreconcilable halves that “are”? Whether you’re fascinated by the history of the Americas, or you’ve dreamed of driving around the globe, or you simply love world records and the stories behind them, The Longest Line on the Map is a riveting narrative, a lost epic of hemispheric scale.

Somewhat Disappointing This book was a major disappointment. The subtitle "The United States, the Pan-American Highway and the Quest to Link the Americas" while addressed in the book, left a great deal to be desired. The first half of the book rambles on about early attempts to link the span with a railroad and only gets to the building of the highway later. The author;s writing style is not engaging and he tends to believe that a great amount of filler is needed to make the book look like more that it should be.I can not recommend this book. There has to be a better one on the subject out there.I received a free Kindle copy of The Longest Line on the Map by Eric Rutkow courtesy of Net Galley and Scribner, the publisher. It was with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon and my fiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus pages.I requested this book as the description sounded interesting (and as I learned can be deceiving). This is the first book by the author that I have read.Good not great I thoroughly enjoy books on history that read more like a novel than a dry textbook. this is one of those. Rutkow covers such a wide range of geography and social politics that it is impossible for the normal reader to verify the details he presents. When he covered the importance of theodore Roosevelt to the Western Hemisphere, primarily the Panama Canal, the author mentioned that TR earned his western chops while ranching in the Badlands of South Dakota. This is a jarring error that brings to wonder what other mistakes were made that are not so obvious. There are two Badlands, the other being North Dakota where TR spent his time. The title also implies the use of maps and there wwere none.
