Midnight in Chernobyl Free Pdf

ISBN: B07GFRZVZ8
Title: Midnight in Chernobyl Pdf

The definitive, dramatic untold story of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster, based on original reporting and new archival research.

April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world's perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet's delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

Chernobyl was also a key event in the destruction of the Soviet Union, and, with it, the United States' victory in the Cold War. For Moscow, it was a political and financial catastrophe as much as an environmental and scientific one. With a total cost of 18 billion rubles - at the time equivalent to $18 billion - Chernobyl bankrupted an already teetering economy and revealed to its population a state built upon a pillar of lies.

The full story of the events that started that night in the control room of reactor number four of the V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Plant has never been told - until now. Through two decades of reporting, new archival information, and firsthand interviews with witnesses, journalist Adam Higginbotham tells the full dramatic story, including Alexander Akimov and Anatoli Dyatlov, who represented the best and worst of Soviet life; denizens of a vanished world of secret policemen, internal passports, food lines, and heroic self-sacrifice for the motherland.

Midnight in Chernobyl, award-worthy nonfiction that reads like sci-fi, shows not only the final epic struggle of a dying empire, but also the story of individual heroism and desperate, ingenious technical improvisation joining forces against a new kind of enemy.

The official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power Author Adam Higginbotham has done a masterful job of blowing the lid off of the sarcophagus of obfuscation under which the Soviet Union attempted to bury the truths about what happened at Chernobyl in April of 1986. He dug deep into archives, personal papers, professional journals, and hundreds of hours of interviews to piece together the puzzle of the events that led up to the explosion that destroyed Reactor Number Four at Chernobyl. The author offers, as well, background into the flaws in the design of the RBMK graphite-moderated boiler water reactor. He examines the corrupt and labyrinthine system of managing nuclear power in the USSR. While this is a superb work of journalism, it also holds the intrigue of a murder mystery. Who really was responsible? What really happened? Was it design error or operator error? The author makes this a very enlightening journey inside the minds of Soviet and Ukrainian leaders and scientists, as well as inside the broken lives of the workers who operated the plant and lived in nearby Pripyat.Mr. Higginbotham makes a credible case for the fact that the Chernobyl disaster and its lingering aftershocks were the catalysts that led to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Glasnost and Perestroika were not able to overcome the inertia of a Soviet machine that did not know how to tell the truth to its people or to the world at large. That lack of candor became as toxic for the Soviet state as the radioactive debris from Chernobyl became for those in the path of the fallout.I had a very personal;interest in this story. In 1992, I was part of a UN group that toured the Chernobyl complex, the village of Pripyat, and several hospitals in Kiev that were treating hundreds of victims of chronic radiation poisoning. Many of them were suffering from leukemia, thyroid cancer, and a host of other diseases. When we arrived at Chernobyl, we were taken to a visitors' center where we were show a 1:6 scale model of the Chernobyl complex. The official guide proceeded to give this UN group a speech about the wonderful safety history of Soviet nuclear power. "Of course, there was this one small incident that the world tries to blow out of proportion," At that time, one of the remaining reactors was still functioning, ,and we were taken to the control room, mere yards from the notorious sarcophagus that had been built to bury the debris of the core of Reactor Number Four. The engineers operating the plant were smoking, and ashes from their cigarettes fell onto the dials of the instruments that told them the status of the reactor and the turbines. It was clear that not many safety lessons had been learned from the worst nuclear accident in history. This is a story with many villains and some remarkable heroes. Add to the list of heroes Mr. Higginbotham, whose yeoman work in uncovering facts and truths about Chernobyl will help the world to make more informed choices about the future of nuclear energy. This is a book that should be read by anyone with an interest in energy, the history of the Soviet Union, and the forces that shape history.Enjoy!Life, death, and an epic tale of nuclear disaster This is a gripping and enthralling read: a wild ride through a nuclear disaster and the desperate attempts of the men and women who tried to prevent it becoming something far worse. Higginbotham has a great turn of phrase, a grip on the material - but most of all, a sense that this a real story about real people. If you go into this seeing it as a story of nuclear physics and the failure of the Soviet Union, you’ll come out realizing that’s only part of the story. The men who fought the fires after the first explosion, the woman mayor who tried to save her town, the families who watched loved ones suffer from radiation sickness - this is about life and death. The story also tells us something about how politicians and officials struggled to manage - even deny - the truth, but the scale of the disaster escaped them. It’s a great read.

Fatemarked is now a #1 Amazon bestseller in NINE categories. Start your 4,000+ page epic adventure today.

Epic in scope I find sometimes with epic fantasy that where there is a great concept, there is not always great execution. This series (I've read them all) bucked that trend.Other reviewers have already neatly summarised the plot, so I will just mention quickly what I really appreciated about the writing.Yes; there are parallels to Game of Thrones, but only really insofar as the descriptions of some geography. The writing is excellent and the dialogue smart. Like all people, there were very few who were consistently good or bad. As a reader, you are expected to pay attention and follow facinating chracter development arcs. The author writes women well (thank you for making women concerned about more than men!) and wrangles a complex storyline well and wasn't afraid to kill off characters when necessary for story cohesion.Hooked I truly did not think that I would like this series. After seeing it recommended several times and my curiosity peaked.... I finally caved, thinking what the heck, if I don't like it, I won't have to finish it. Well... Once I got into it, I was hooked. Bravo, Mr. Estes ! Now, on to the next installment !A fantastic journey to mayham! I picked this up on a friend's recommendation, thank you friend! Another must read for all fantasy buffs, you will not be disappointed.Characters catch your thoughts and don't let go until your last turn of the last page. I rarely rush out a buy the rest of a series...I did with this one.

Wild Game Free Pdf

Title: Wild Game Pdf My Mother, Her Lover, and Me
A daughter’s tale of living in the thrall of her magnetic, complicated mother, and the chilling consequences of her complicity.

On a hot July night on Cape Cod when Adrienne was fourteen, her mother, Malabar, woke her at midnight with five simple words that would set the course of both of their lives for years to come: Ben Souther just kissed me.

Adrienne instantly became her mother’s confidante and helpmate, blossoming in the sudden light of her attention, and from then on, Malabar came to rely on her daughter to help orchestrate what would become an epic affair with her husband’s closest friend. The affair would have calamitous consequences for everyone involved, impacting Adrienne’s life in profound ways, driving her into a precarious marriage of her own, and then into a deep depression. Only years later will she find the strength to embrace her life—and her mother—on her own terms.

Wild Game is a brilliant, timeless memoir about how the people close to us can break our hearts simply because they have access to them, and the lies we tell in order to justify the choices we make. It’s a remarkable story of resilience, a reminder that we need not be the parents our parents were to us.

Innocent Victims Pdf

ISBN: B01N5VD3R7
Title: Innocent Victims Pdf The True Story of the Eastburn Family Murders
The riveting true account of a grisly crime and the unprecedented three murder trials faced by Fort Bragg soldier Tim Hennis.

On Mother’s Day, 1985, the bodies of Kathryn Eastburn and her two young daughters were found in their Fayetteville, North Carolina, home. Katie, an air force captain’s wife, had been raped and stabbed to death. Kara and Erin’s throats had been slit. Their toddler sister, Jana, was the only survivor of a bloody killing spree that terrified a community still reeling from the conviction, six years prior, of Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald for the savage slayings of his pregnant wife and two daughters.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department soon focused its investigation on US Army soldier Tim Hennis. Detectives and local prosecutors built their case on circumstantial evidence and a jury convicted Hennis and sentenced him to death. But his defense team refused to give up. Piece by piece, they discredited the state’s case, exposing false testimony, concealed evidence, and prosecutorial misconduct. At a second trial, Hennis was found not guilty and released from death row.

But an even more stunning turn of events was yet to come. Twenty-five years after the murders, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation tested a crucial piece of DNA evidence from the crime scene. The shocking results led to an unprecedented third trial to determine Tim Hennis’s guilt or innocence.

From the initial discovery of the horrifying scene at 367 Summer Hill Road to the controversial change of jurisdiction that allowed Hennis to be prosecuted for an astonishing third time, author Scott Whisnant chronicles every development in this intricate, disturbing, and still-evolving case. Has the mystery of who killed Katie, Kara, and Erin Eastburn been solved beyond a reasonable doubt? Read Innocent Victims and decide for yourself.

Could he possibly have done it? As a True Crime book, this one is a stunner. So many twists and turns in this story and at each juncture I was gasping. First, whenever children are murdered, it brings a whole new layer of hideous to the crime. And the defendant seemed like such a stand-up guy! You want to believe he could not have possibly committed such an atrocious act. You breathe easier when he's finally acquitted and set free--until DNA testing comes into the picture! The ups and downs in this true story are staggering! Who or what to believe? Then add in the involvement of the military in the entirety of the crime and you as the reader are left breathless. I will not forget this one for a long time.

No Regrets (The Valens Legacy Book 17) Free Pdf

ISBN: B0813691DN
Title: No Regrets (The Valens Legacy Book 17) Pdf
Sean is back in the Onderwereld, but this time it's on his own terms and he brought some friends. Their investigations of the djevels and the race that created the mechanisms that power the gateways bear unexpected fruits however, leading Sean and the rest of the lions to some very unexpected discoveries, as well as results.

But regardless of all of that, there is still a war going on back home and Reno is hanging on by its nails as the djevels have some tricks of their own up their sleeves. Win or lose, when all is said and done, the world that Sean and the rest of his friends will find themselves in, will be a very different one than what they grew up in.

WARNING: "No Regrets" contains explicit sexuality, nudity, violence, bad language, robbery, murder, demons doing nasty things, self-defense, pro-active self-defense, unexpected traitors, unexpected rewards, unscrupulous people, polyamory, mayhem, more demons, people who aim to misbehave, gratuitous sex and violence, and ... Hey! who let the author out of that room! Quick! Get him before he gets away!

Love these books. Ends the series on just the right note. Amazing story, and a satisfying ending. This book gives us closure, overpowered characters, justice, permanent upgrades, great action, a great tying up of loose ends, a twist or three, and hints for a new series to continue the storyline sometime down the road. I have loved this series since book one, and while I am sorry to see it end, I find myself very satisfied with the complete arc. And with an actual end. Here's hoping the author takes a well-deserved break, and takes some time for some of his other projects. However, I feel confident, that if he ever gets back into this universe, he's got a dedicated fan base who will buy whatever he puts down.Great ending for a great series! I especially like the final solution to the Onderwereld--plenty of hints over the course of the third arc but it still catches one by surprise. And nice that Markey gets to take the really bad guy down.Take a good long vacation, John, like the First. If nothing else, it'll give you time to get your perspective back (to say nothing of writing more Portals of Infinity and other tales). That way you can be fresh when you decide to start the next series, about Sean Jr. and his MANY MANY (by then) half brothers and sisters. Seeing what Mtwala and Nguvu do to make everyone's lives--er--difficult, would be plenty fun to look forward to.As always, a pleasure. I've looked forward to each book in this series as they were released for the last couple of years. There were times where the next book coming out in a month or two was literally the only thing I was looking forward to at the time. It's escapism and power fantasies, mixed with sex and fun, and it should maybe be empty and pointless (we know things are going to turn out ok, right?) but it isn't. It cares, and makes you care, and is genuinely interesting.A world of distinct characters who feel real and like you know them, multiple fantasy races, dimensions, magic and rule sets to explore, new realistic (within the setting) challenges to face and deal with in each story line, and it never loses its grounding in the relatable main character who's developing and growing to deal with each new obstacle. It's fun fiction and it's harem and magic and fantasy, but it is also a pure pleasure to read because it's written so smoothly and well. Congratulations to an accomplished author on completing a hell of a series. Looking forward to the next book, whatever it may be.On a personal note to the author, thank you for giving me a good world to escape to during some dark times when I really needed something, anything, good to look forward to. Never doubt you've made a difference in people's lives, you definitely did in mine. Good books matter - in every genre!
